Thrush Holmes

August 1, 2016

Canadian artist Holmes incorporates neon into his oil paintings with a punk rock sensibility, mixing classical motifs such as flower still lifes with bold slashes of color that seemingly pulsate on the canvas. "I typically secure neon minutes after having completed a painting," says the former carpenter, who keeps a catalog of more than 100 neon elements on hand. "If too much time passes, some of the romance of the act is lost. It can't be an afterthought."

"Canadian artist Thrush Holmes returns for a third solo exhibition at the Mike Weiss Gallery with his new series 'Heavy Painting'. The series is comprised of about fifteen works, mostly oil on canvas coupled with inventive materials such as car sealer, spray paint, gel medium and neon. Holmes, a self-taught artist and former carpenter refers to himself as a 'true tradesman' and revels in creating large-scale, physical, tangible works. The pieces exude a raw and visceral feeling yet seduce the eye with their hypnotizing allure."
